The Law of Giving & Receiving
Our system of giving is based on Biblical guidelines, namely tithes and offerings. The Old Testament exhorts us to bring "all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." (Malachi 3:10) God promised his people that He would rebuke the devourer and pour out blessings if they adhered to tithing and offerings. Additionally, in the New Testament, the Lord Jesus is recorded in Matthew 23:23 admonishing us that tithing should not be left undone (or neglected).
It is important, however, that believers understand that tithing and the giving of offerings are a part of God's law of reciprocity. This higher law is very simple yet divinely powerful because the Almighty God backs it. It is recorded throughout the bible in numerous ways: "give and it shall be given unto you" and "you shall reap what you sow." God has ordained that the liberal soul will be made fat, and those who hold back do so to their own destruction.
Because it takes faith to tithe and give bountifully, your giving reflects your faith in God. When the carnal offers excuses, the soul that loves the Lord and understands God's law will override their fears to give. There are several ways of designating your giving:
Tithes represent that portion of your income you have purposed in your heart to give consistently. They are used for the maintenance and expansion of Christ's ministry. The biblical portion of each member's income is shown to be a minimum of 10%. Thus, we use it as a guideline. (Genesis 14:20 and 28:22)
Offerings are the portion of your income you give over and above your tithe. Since offering amounts vary, it is important to allow God to speak to you regarding offering amounts. He may wish to use your offering as a vehicle to increase your faith. (Ezra 3:4-7, and 2 Corinthians 9:6-14)
